Dog Teaches
First half of the book for children Dog and Cat Teach
By Amy Gailey
Introduction: for Parental figures &/or Teachers
We are souls, divine beings having physical experiences here on Earth. Each of us has a unique path and adventure to traverse. We all have unique perspectives and gifts. We are all here to blossom into all we can be, to know and love ourselves and our lives. We are here to begin to master ourselves and realize our true greatness as more than just physical beings. Children are more naturally in tune with their soul and their missions here. They are still fresh, the world hasn’t flogged the spirit out of them yet. Don’t let it. These pages are written to encourage children to expand upon their truth, know themselves, honor themselves and others, as we are all one and here in it together. Teach your children well, and allow them to teach you too. Allow them to remind you that you too are a beautiful, unique soul. Allow them to remind you of the wonder life holds.
Some of these words and concepts may seem like too much for your young one, but I believe children rise to the standards we set for them. Their potential and abilities are vast and probably outreach our own imaginations. I fully suspect with your guidance they will be quickly on their way to a larger understanding of life itself. Let them surprise you, they will show you how very smart they are.
Additionally, even though these paragraphs are very simply written and meant for children, I believe that these concepts may have escaped some older individuals. These quick little segments can easily help them understand things that could greatly change their lives and possibly peak their desire to seek out more in depth information. There are many teens and adults walking around unaware of what their personal boundaries are, they’ve got no idea what allowing is, and even worse no clue as to how to love themselves. Let’s break that pattern now.
Introduction: continued for all readers
All beings are precious and divine. All beings have special qualities and traits that define their point of view and purpose in the world. All beings have things to learn and things to teach. In my observations {äbzer’vāSH(e)ns} these are a few things I have learned from Dog.
Observation: the act of watching, monitoring someone or something carefully in order to gain information.

Dog Teaches: Unconditional{un’kuhn’di’shuh’nuhl} Love.
Unconditional love is the most patient love of all.
The ability to intently {uhn’tent’lee} focus on another with compassion {kuhm’pa’shun} and accept the other as part of oneself, true connection {kuh’nek’shn}. This kind of love is unbreakable, even if it’s a bad day. It’s affection {uh’fek’shun} without limits, and if you’ve ever been greeted by a happy puppy you understand exactly what this means.
Intently: with earnest and eager attention
Focus (verb): pay particular attention to
Compassion: tangible expression of love, especially toward those suffering or in distress.
Connection: a linked relationship
Affection: a gentle feeling of fondness or liking
Dog loves his boy. Dog loves to just sit by boy’s side and follow him where ever he goes. Sometimes boy has a bad day and he doesn’t know what else to do but kick and scream. Dog still sits quietly by as boy expresses his anger and frustration {fruh’strei’shn}. When boy is finished, dog brings him a toy and lovingly helps to lift his mood again.
Frustration: a common emotional response to opposition, related to anger, annoyance, and disappointment
Dog Teaches: Loyalty {loy’uhl’tee}
Loyalty comes from love. It is aligning {uh’lai’nuhng} oneself with another in a supportive {suh’por’tuhv} way.
Dog desires to be with boy for life and the two have formed a bond. They are both loyal to each other. Boy cares for dog with love, food, water, special treats, and vet visits to maintain {mein’tein} his overall well-being. Dog protects his boy from unknown others and risky situations {si’choo’ei’shns}. Dog is wholeheartedly {howl’haar’tid’lee} boy’s best friend and partner.
Aligning: giving support to
Supportive: providing encouragement or emotional help
Maintain: provide things needed for the continuation of life
Situations: a set of circumstances in which one finds oneself; a state of affairs
Wholeheartedly: With complete sincerity and commitment
Dog Teaches: Allowing
Allowing is the ability to see the blessings all around one, in the present moment. The ability to accept all the good and know that it’s meant just for you.
Dog is never afraid to accept positive {paa’zuh’tuhv} attention. If dog wants to be petted, he will find a person and “ask” to be petted. Dog thoroughly {thur’ow’lee} enjoys affection and attention {uh’ten’shn} without guilt.

Positive (adj.): constructive, optimistic, or confident
Thoroughly: very much, greatly
Affection (verb): the act of physically expressing love usually with some form of loving touch.
Attention: the regarding of someone or something as interesting or important.
Do you have a dog? Can you think of ways that your dog teaches you?
How does your dog “ask” for things? What does your dog ask for most?
How are you like dog?
What other animals and their lessons can you think of now?
